Steven Arnett’s noir murder mystery, Death on Lake Michigan, is an adroit pairing of investigative sleuthing and police procedural as O’Brien and his buddy on the local police force, Detective George Dirkman of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, work in tandem in their attempt to solve the mystery. Arnett provides plenty of red herrings to give the reader his/her own opportunities to consider the clues and guess at the culprit. The Gull Haven location is inspired and lovely, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if other readers will be as tempted to visit that little beach town as much as I was. Arnett’s Mike O’Brien is everything you’d want in a noir detective or, in this case, investigative sleuth. He’s got an eye for women and is relatively fearless in his quest for the truth. And while I did raise my eyebrows at his penchant for white wine, I’ll grant him that one idiosyncrasy. Death on Lake Michigan is highly recommended.

Winners and Losers by Steven Arnett is about a man named Tom Slotrak. He is just 26 years old, but he already feels like an old man. His life has no thrills, no excitement, and there are certainly no fun times with some beautiful woman whom he can claim and call his own. Don’t get him wrong, he has a fiancée. But the romance and passion in their relationship has just burnt out. He has his eyes fixed on one delicious piece called Lena Coffee and once he gets her attention, nothing can hold him back. Not even her motorcycle gang member boyfriend. He didn’t know that things would go south from there.
His life took an unexpected turn when he won a lottery and became super rich overnight. He never had this much money, so he obviously thought now he can buy things he never had before: like happiness. Too bad, he had no idea what money can do to a person and people around him. By some strange turn of events and some hilarious plot twists, Tom has to battle to get his hard earned lottery winnings. Or he could end up dead.
This is definitely one of the funniest and most entertaining novels I have read this year. Tom Slotrak (I’m pretty sure this surname was intended) is one gem of a character. His rants (mental and verbal), the way he walks, talks, and behaves is just priceless. I’m so glad I picked up this book. A huge thumbs up for Steven Arnett for writing such a hilarious and entertaining novel.

I definitely recommend The Strange Curse of Breda. This is the second thriller written by Steven Arnett that I have read. I completed it over the weekend. This one is just as good as the first, Death on Lake Michigan. There are a few things I liked about this novel, so I'll start at the top of the list. What I liked most about this book is the edge of my seat scenes, the ones where the author draws out the tension of the moment, never letting the reader know what will happen until it does. I also liked the way the weather and the locations of towns in Florida and Michigan played into the story.
My next fave is the presentation of the killer. I'm a big fan of Columbo. If you are, too, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. The reader doesn't have to wait to discover who the culprit is who is terrorizing Breda. He's introduced early on. The reader gets to follow along with Mathers, the sheriff, and Jim, a Breda resident, as they try to nab a killer. The reader also gets to see the killer from different perspectives, his actions, and his thoughts. The suspense digs in deep around forty percent of the Kindle book and keeps the momentum up. The author does something with two of the character that really had me engrossed in the book. The serial killer and Jim have scenes of suspense that kept me reading and comparing the character's emotions. I loved it. Also, the characters in this story are completely believable. So, once I read the first sentence - It was a perfect morning for a hanging. - I was all in.
